students' union foc 07/08 ; Saturday, April 14, 2007 23:35
im back from the temasek polytechnic students' union freshmen orientation camp from 12-14 of april. something i registered, and almost wanted to turn back half way, and im so glad i didnt.
met winnie at yck phs bus stop at 1030. she was supposed to pass something to weilie i think, but he was late. and she happened to see qifeng opposite us, so we went after him. we shared a cab to tampines central after that. we reached there at 1130. bought food to eat and took a bus to tp. met jeffery and his friends there. we were late. 1206.
all of us were separated. i only knew jeffery was with me on day2. there were 5empires; i was in ayton. each was divided into a sub, and aytrox after that. everyone could remember how one of our group leaders - samamtha - did spastic cheer. she was so enthusiastic! (:
day1.
ice-breakers after that. realised that many of the freshies were from htm, and mechatronics engineering. we had to play games to get to know everyone's names, more importantly those sitting on your left and right. i remember this time, when there was this gl sitting beside me 3times, and i forgot her name in all of it. she was like, why do you keep following me? and i was, how do i know? from then, i remembered her name like she remembered mine. she was joanna. (:
we were to then, design our empire flag. the design students did it, and the rest did cheering. then it was dinner. for all 3days, we had to cheer the loudest to eat first. rice, tofu and ngo hiang. the funny part came. freshies were to eat first, then the gls. when it was their turn, there was little rice and only tofu and lots of ngo hiangs left. so aytrox became known as ngohiangs after that. they even devised a ngohiang cheer which was in dialect. i cant really remember the lyrics, but it was damn funny. instead of aytons, we became ngohiangs.
we had station games at night in school, which were meant to be in tampines central. lights out were at 0100, but the lights went off at 0000. i dont know why. there were 2toilets in the sports complex, with 20bathing cubicles in all. we had 200+ guys. so by the time we bathed, we it was almost one. we had to get up by 0700 the next day.
day2.
there was morning exercise. our gls were leading it. ben was so cute! we had to do a cha cha dance. it goes. palms together, elbows together, knees together, feet apart, buttocks up, dance! pi gu cha, pi gu cha, pi gu cha cha cha. they know how to get you awake. got a bun for breakfast, and milo with sugar syrup as a drink. tastes nicer than with milk!
no station games means more ice breaking in the sports complex. we learnt a sign language dance, the tp song and of course, tp's mass dance, which led to a chicky dance at the end. if you do all together, you'll be damn tired. i remember i did my first dance with a kaistor gl. i was sweating all over, and she just kept laughing. didnt have time to ask her for her name though. we also had to prepare for performance night too. divided ourselves into 3groups. there was skit, cheer and dance. i was in the skit. we reanacted the first day when we had dinner, and the gls reaction when they saw the tofu and ngohiang. the rest of the committees acted also, followed by our gls the last. omg i simply love their cheers. a little bit of everyone in there. they rocks!
after that, the sports complex turned into mos for an hour. lights off, disco and all. everyone was dancing, in a high mode. and it ended. our camp was almost, but not over yet.
i was walking to the shower and someone called me. it's hard to imagine that someone who we've only seen once before could remember each other. i couldnt even recognise who she is.
day3.
no morning exercise! but we still had to wake up at 0700, and have breakfast half and hour later. we learnt more new cheers, and had station games this time because the sun was out!
i think the theme of the station games was water. everything involved water, and they made sure everyone present was really soaking with water. all of us passed our phones and wallets to joanna, which suddenly made her look very valuable. we walked, jogged, and ran. someone commented it was worse than soccer training. and some in my group were very negative. after all, participating in foc is only once in a lifetime. i dont understand them.
our next stop was hunt-gry. we were given a list of activities to carry out, and cheer after that. samantha had to leave half way, which was sad. i think half of us didnt even know she left. she wanted us to get first. final clash was cancelled due to wet conditions, and we went from last to second. hopefully she'd be happier. i think we really gave our 101%. many of the freshies lost our voice, and mine sounds funny.
the graduating fas had their speech, our gls had their last cheers for the foc, everyone had the last mass dance and tp's song. then everyone came in slowly, into a big circle for photo taking, and by empire. then we gathered among ourselves and the gls went outside, queueing up in a straight line. we got our certificates of participation, and we went out to shake our gls' hands. me and joanna were at it again. we had a hard and windy handshake. haha i love you all! i think they really gave everything they had. they were really great throughout, and did not show any forms of tiredness, although we know they were more tired and hungrier than us.
i didnt go with them to mac and cpf building after that. i dont know the real reason, maybe because the people i was closer to all left halfway. or maybe i had already asked my parents to fetch me, and since they were on the way, i didnt want to say i couldnt make it. it was a tradition to go there, and i didnt. could have caught up with the gls and fas. and i missed it.
